Research That Ships.

I run a deliberate dual-track career: academic research as the space for fundamental, unconstrained R&D, paired with concurrent industry and government partnerships as the vehicle for putting that research into live, funded, real-world delivery. Most of the engagements below were delivered through UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) — a UK government scheme that embeds a university academic, as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, directly inside a company to lead a funded R&D project — alongside direct industry roles, innovation vouchers, and cross-sector public-sector platforms.

Why This Counts as Real Industry Experience

A KTP is not a lighter-weight substitute for industry experience.

A reader unfamiliar with the UK's Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme might assume "university-industry partnership" means arm's-length advisory work. It's the opposite. Here's what the structure actually means, concretely:

1. Embedded delivery, not advisory

A KTP places the academic as PI or Co-I with direct responsibility for a named engineer (the "KTP Associate") embedded inside the company, building the product day to day. This is project leadership from inside the business.

2. Real company co-investment

KTP funding is co-funded with the host company's own budget, staff time and infrastructure. Wyser committed £400k, Neotas £350k, BT £123k, Mersea Homes £250k — a market-validated commitment, not a favour to academia.

3. Judged on commercial outcomes

Every KTP below was measured by what shipped and what it changed for the business — accuracy gains, cost savings, time-to-market — the same categories any industry engineering leader is measured against.

4. Production software, not prototypes

In every case, the work went into the company's live production systems — BT's internal environment, Neotas' classification model, Mersea Homes' .NET platform, Wyser's agentic reasoning system — and kept running after the grant ended.

5. Real budget & roadmap authority

On Neotas, the role owned budget allocation (staff vs. compute) and the 1–3 year technology roadmap, working directly with the Founder and two regional managers. On BT, the role owned the "what gets built and why" roadmap decision.

6. Real commercial assets created

Several projects produced joint University-Corporate IP and patent filings (Neotas, BT), coordinated directly with the companies' own Legal and Compliance teams.

7. Associates go on to permanent roles

On the BT KTP, the embedded Associate secured a permanent position at BT directly because of the quality of the delivered work — ending the KTP ten months early.

8. The model scales beyond KTPs

The same delivery discipline extended into a direct executive role (Bezoku) and a cross-organisational government platform (PICASO, spanning the MoD, the Alan Turing Institute and Southampton) — the same operating model regardless of funding structure.

In short: a KTP is a specific UK mechanism for delivering genuine industry experience, with the added rigour of dual accountability to a funding body (Innovate UK) and a paying commercial partner.

One of the first agentic AI systems built for the legal domain — built before MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers existed and ahead of the industry's broad adoption of LLM-based agentic approaches. The system moved employment-law and industrial-relations service delivery from a manual, task-level process to an autonomous, multi-step AI reasoning system.

Outcome: Secured an 18-month first-to-market advantage for the client by delivering agentic AI capability well ahead of mainstream adoption.

An AI-driven Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) platform combining NLP and image analysis to accelerate and automate the collection of due-diligence intelligence on individuals and entities — used for Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money-Laundering (AML) risk screening and third-party/vendor-risk workflows, for a client base of regulated financial institutions (banks, insurers, wealth managers) and private equity firms.

Scope of ownership: Directed a cross-functional, international AI initiative spanning a 30+ person organisation with headquarters in the UK and India. Partnered directly with the company Founder and two regional managers; owned budget allocation (staff vs. compute) and the 1–3 year strategic technology roadmap.

AI-driven models to optimise customer interactions, deployed directly into BT's internal production systems. A unified transformer-based multi-task model for joint intent classification and named-entity recognition was developed as part of this work and is deployed and actively used by BT's development team.

Outcome: Reduced annotation time by 90%. The work scaled the effectiveness of BT's full Data Science team (50+ staff). Owned the strategic commercial roadmap deciding "what gets built and why." Resulted in two research papers, a production deployment, and the KTP Associate securing a permanent role at BT — the project concluded ten months early as a direct result. Collaborated cross-functionally with BT's Legal and university compliance teams on regulatory standards and joint patent filings.

An integrated smart platform and bespoke client-side application (site plan material sharing, management and version control) for the property development industry, improving office-site communication. The AI agent — the first of its kind for this use case at the company — reduced construction workers' on-site decision-making time. Engineering build implemented in .NET by the supervised KTP associate/engineer, integrating into Mersea Homes' existing systems.

Outcome: Saved the company an estimated £50,000/year. Winner, "Best KTP Project (SME) 2022."

Full project name: PICASO — Probabilistic Conceptual Spaces Sensemaking under Uncertainty. Spans the Ministry of Defence (end customer), the Alan Turing Institute, and the University of Southampton.

A production-ready intelligence platform for the Ministry of Defence, built heavily on generative AI (LLM-based reasoning). As grant-holding Principal Investigator, directed the R&D roadmap for modelling knowledge as probability clouds, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy with built-in uncertainty quantification for high-stakes decision-making. Outcomes are backed by peer-reviewed technical documentation.

Across every engagement above, the operating model has been consistent and deliberate: academia provided the freedom to invent — space for fundamental, unconstrained R&D (the probabilistic modelling, embeddings and reasoning research underpinning this work) — while industry and government partnerships provided the freedom to apply those inventions: real deployment, real budgets, and real production constraints. Every industry role above was held concurrently with an academic post, not sequentially — the two tracks ran side by side by design.
